The familiar is rendered unfamiliar, the common place unusual - images of Canada and Mexico

Paul (Paleologos) Soulikias was born in Greece in 1926. He studied Art in Athens and in 1956 he went to Paris where he studied intensively the great masters of the Louvre. He returned to Greece and in 1959 he left for Canada as an experienced and insightful painter. This knowledge, combined with his own research and work, made him rule and attribute artistically the Canadian nature with a “New Glance”.

With regard to his issues, he painted each subject that inspired him: landscapes, still nature, portraits, compositions with persons etc. The landscape of course was his main subject that brought him near nature and thus he is considered as one of the best landscape artists in Canada and Greece. When they asked him in which faculty he studied, he said: “I studied in the biggest faculty of world”. In the question which was that, he answered: “It is the faculty of nature. I drank water from the source and not from the ditch of water”. This is how P. Soulikias sees nature.

He began exhibiting his work in important galleries as early as 1965. In 1974, his collaboration with the Dominion Gallery, one of the most prestigious in North America, was a turning point for his career. It was there that he was given the opportunity by Dr Max Stern to exhibit his work along with the great sculptor Henry Moore. His paintings have been exhibited across Canada and several cities abroad, like New York and Athens, from 1983 until 1985.
