Karditsa is the first city in Greece that incorporated in citizen’s every day life the bicycle. Bicycle is the main way of transportation for the citizens. That habit stimulanted scientists to plan and make practice the first net of cycle ways in Greece. The net of cycle ways covers central roads, unifies and at the same time brings out the main parts of the city. At the same time, the extensive use of bicycle aims at the reduction of the environmental pollution and car’s noise. The city has roads full of life where the transportations are basically made by bicycle or on foot. Walking and cycling cover the 60% of the total transportation. However, a cycle way needs series of other things as well as, in order to work properly and be functional.

What is needed is the promotion of a campaign concerning the motivation, the sensibilisation and the participation of citizens to the management of traffic. For this purpose is created the Park of Circulation Management in the city, where children learn to follow and respect the traffic signs. The National Technical University of Athens has also made a research study concerning the integration of the bicycle in the Greek city underlying that it is not only a matter of transportation planning but it should be followed by campaigns of informing and improving the bicycle’s image as well .
