Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean

The Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean ( Barcelona Convention) was adopted in 1976, entered in force in 1978, and was revised in Barcelona in 1995. Activities within the Convention are coordinated by the MAP Coordinating Unit (MEDU). The objective of the Convention is to achieve international co-operation for a co-ordinated and comprehensive approach to the protection and enhancement of the marine environment and the coastal region of the Mediterranean area.
Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC
European Union The European Union (EU) has established a Community framework for water protection and management. The Framework Directive provides, among other things, for the identification of European waters and their characteristics, on the basis of individual river basin districts, and the adoption of management plans and programmes of measures appropriate for each body of water.
