Hydria Project

MONUMENTA participated in the HYDRIA project following the water routes in Naxos and ancient Athens.

MONUMENTA participated in the HYDRIA project carried out by the Mediterranean Information Office (ΜΙΟ) on the topic of investigating traditional methods of water collection, storage and distribution and the utilization of ancient know-how for modern water-related needs. The project funded by UNESCO, MIO and  GWPMed  had as its main objective the creation of a website where the material related to the above is presented with reports from various Mediterranean countries. Six countries participated in the first phase of the program: Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Egypt, Jordan and Morocco. The website is
available at www.hydriaproject.net and is expected to be enriched in the future with more geographical references.

MONUMENTA undertook the research of traditional water management methods in Naxos and ancient Athens. On the HYDRIA website, visitors are informed about the watermills of Naxos which, with a particularly clever mechanism, utilize the kinetic energy of water for the production of flour, but also about the ancient aqueduct of Fleuri, which transported water to the Chora of Naxos, for the wells and the water pumping mechanisms, as well as for the modern water retention dams that were implemented in the settlement of Aperathos with impressive results. Also, you can learn about the Mycenaean fountain on the rock of the Acropolis, about the Peisitrate aqueduct and its route, about the fountains and wells of the Ancient Agora, but also discover the traces of the until recently forgotten river Iridanos.
