MOnuMENTA, in the frame of the programme ‘Local Communities & Monuments’ and in collaboration with the Municipality of Naxos and the Small Cyclades, organises an event titled: «Pretty village harsly deformed», on Sunday 30th of August in the traditional settlement of Filoti (Lachanario Square) of Naxos. It is the 5th event organised and with this, the cycle of lectures and public dialogue concerning thematics on the protection of the build and natural environment of Naxos is concluded.
This year’s event is dedicated to the 22 declared traditional settlements of Naxos that face serious problems of deformation and abandonment.
The legal framework of their protection has been proven weak and unable to protect them from unscheduled building, problematic restorations of old buildings, the unplanned growth of the settlements, the abandonment and the destruction of characteristics that compiled their physiognomy. This event aspires to present the problems and ways of protection, forming a dialogue between the state protection agencies and the local communities. We believe that raising of awareness among the citizens is the main motive for the protection of the settlements.
The importance of the tradtional settlements is great and reflects -apart from architectural criteria of aesthetics, scale and relation with the natural environment- upon the social construct and the daily culture of these historical settings -gradually going extinct- but also upon the possibility of sustainable development activities based on cultural tourism.
The event includes 2 lectures on the problems of the Naxos’ traditional settlements and the process of their protection by the architects Themis Billis & Maria Magnisali and the archaeologist Irini Gratsia. Representatives of state protection agencies will express their opinions and a public dialogue will follow.
The event is kindly supported by The J.F. COSTOPOULOS FOUNDATION
