As years pass the international day for monuments, the 18th of April, becomes even more necessary since the problems and the threats for the historical buildings and settlements, archeological areas, historical places, gardens and monuments increase. The celebration of this day offers a chance to inform and to make people more sensitive, especially those in the proper departments in order for them to inform the wider public about the protection of the cultural heritage.
The universal day for monuments and sites, as it is specifically named, started in 1982 by ICOMOS and in 1983 it was decreed by the 22nd general conference of UNESCO. Its goal every year is to trigger the fuse in order to inform us about the wealth of the universal cultural heritage and to make efforts for its preservation and protection.
This year’s day is dedicated to religious heritage and sacred places and different departments are called upon to organize events with the above subject. In Greece on the 18th of April the entrance fee to monuments is free.
