Hamburg: How a green network can protect urban biodiversity
Sofia Giannaki, biologist, M.Sc. environmental-spatial planning engineer

The conservation of urban biodiversity is connected with the conservation of green areas and their unhindered communication. The open spaces’ fragmentation in cities blocks communication of animals and plants and hinders genetic material exchange. The city of Hamburg exploits its open spaces by integrating them into a wide spread green network which acts as a biodiversity ark.

Urban expansion and the "other" city
Constantinos Chatzifragkios - Makrydakis, topographer

Slums are the first stop for the immigrants who are looking for a shelter when they arrive in a city for the first time. It is a place of mixing for different cultures that often produces new movements in arts and the crush that predominates in them can sometimes lead their communities and neighborhoods in levels of solidarity unknown to the rich suburbs.
